Urogynecologists Treat Difficult Health Issues Many Women Face

There are many health issues that exist which only women are affected by. Because of this, there have been over the decades many specialized women’s healthcare services becoming more accessible. From heart health, to pregnancy matters, all the way to treatment for breast and ovarian cancers, there are many specialists that focus explicitly on issues affecting women. The most common and well-known of these are obstetrician and gynecology specialists, which focus on the health of women’s pelvic organs and reproductive systems. In recent years, however, increasing numbers of women have been requesting the services of a new women’s health specialty called urogynecology.

Urogynecology is a women’s health specialty that combines the knowledge and functions of obstetrics, gynecology, as well as urology. Though urologists generally treat both male and female urinary-tract health issues, the addition of obstetrics and gynecology means that urogynecologists focus only on female urinary, pelvic, and reproductive health issues. Urogynecology is still a relatively new area of health study and treatment, having only received official status as a sub-specialty between the years 2011 and 2013. Yet, because of the specific health issues that it focuses on, as well as the numbers of women that are affected by these issues, urogynecology treatments have quickly become very important and helpful in the realm of women’s health.

Urogynecologists are specially trained to evaluate and treat varying conditions that affect a woman’s pelvic organs, along with the muscles and connective tissue that support these organs. Some of the conditions they will treat include pelvic or bladder pain, other issues relating to emptying the bladder or rectum, pelvic prolapse and fistulas, and urinary or fecal incontinence. The causes of these and other related issues can vary, ranging from childbirth to menopause to general aging, as well as the effects of other medical or surgical treatments. Even more, the conditions that urogynecologists treat affect 1 out of every 4 women, which exceeds the numbers of women who suffer from diabetes or depression.

Depending on the specific type and severity of the condition, a urogynecologist may utilize three primary approaches to treatment. A behavioral approach to treatment may be utilized in those cases where the conditions are evaluated as being caused by certain behaviors of diet, exercise, or environment. In other cases, a urogynecologist may prescribe various pharmaceutical medicines for a pharmacological approach to treatment. With those conditions and cases that are more serious, a urogynecologist may determine that a surgical approach to treatment is best.

Although the field of urogynecology is still quite young, countless women have come to rely on it for the betterment of their health and life. For any women that have questions about any issues they are having with their pelvic or reproductive systems, it is important to get a referral from their physician or ob/gyn right away to have a consultation and evaluation with an experienced urogynecologist.
